WEDDINGS…BY THE NUMBERS

By Marino M. Regalado, Ninja Entertainment Productions

Weddings are a numbers game. Many brides put together their own wedding receptions without knowing what exactly are the totals of time and money they are investing into this special, once-in-a-lifetime event. Of course, each wedding reception is different, so what may apply to one couple will not apply to another. However, based on client feedback, wedding magazines (e.g., Hawaii Bride, Southern California Bride, Modern Bride, etc.), and good, old-fashioned "homework" (calling catering departments, photographers, videographers, etc.), we at Ninja Entertainment Productions were able to compile some averages for a typical wedding reception held in Hawaii in the year 2000. How does your wedding reception stack up?

  • $27,000 – average total investment on a wedding in the year 2003
  • $6000-15,000 – average investment in food and beverage catering at a typical wedding reception, or 30-75% of the budget
  • $4500 – investment of the wedding per hour (based on a five hour reception, $27,000 / 6 hrs)
  • $1188-2969 – the total investment of just the sales tax and gratuity on the food alone (based on average investment of $6000-15,000 on food & beverage catering)
  • $1000-4000 – average total investment for quality photography (5-20% of the budget)
  • $800-2000 – average total investment for quality video/slide show services (4-10% of the budget)
  • $500-1000 – your possible investment if hiring a professional reception coordinator by himself/herself (no equipment, no entertainment or music experience, no music)
  • $400 – cost for just the RENTAL of professional DJ equipment alone (no DJ to run it, no music library included)
  • $300-1000 – cost of hiring an experienced professional Master of Ceremonies by himself/herself (no music experience)
  • $300-800 – average cost of the wedding cake, or roughly 2-4% of the budget
  • $300-500 – cost of hiring a wedding planner by himself/herself (no entertainment or music experience)
  • $300-500 – average cost for a typical DJ in Hawaii (2-3% of the budget), and what most brides consider a "professional" DJ is worth
  • $200-500 –average total investment for centerpieces and favors (1-3% of the budget)
  • $175 – cost to hire professional sound & lighting contractors by itself (no entertainment experience, no music, no equipment) to come in, set up the equipment, and make sure it works ($25/hr [union scale] x 5 hrs in your reception = $125 + $50 for setup and breakdown = $175 per technician)
  • 80% -- the amount of responsibility that the entertainer has in making your reception successful (four hours of a typical five hour reception, roughly two hours for the program and two hours of dancing afterward)
  • 24 – number of hours a full-time entertainer, photographer, or videographer will work for you daily
  • 20% -- the amount of responsibility that the caterer (and live band during the meal, if any) has in making your reception successful (one hour out of a typical five hour reception, the time for the meal and background music)
  • 18% -- typical gratuity you will have to invest in on top of the price for the meal
  • $7.50 – average investment per person for just the veggie platter (broccoli sticks, carrots, cauliflower, Hidden Valley Ranch dressing). At $7.50 per guest x 200 guests = $1500 you will invest on just the veggie platter, or 8% of the budget! Will your guests remember the veggie platter?
  • 5 hours in a typical wedding reception, the number of hours of you will have to create wonderful memories that last forever
  • 4.1667% -- percentage of sales tax in the state of Hawaii
  • 2 people celebrating their special union of love in front of their family and friends
  • #1 fear in America is public speaking
  • 1 year or more usually taken to put together and plan your special day
  • FREE – what most "friends" say they will charge to MC the party, but would rather relax and have a good time than take this responsibility seriously

Priceless – Knowing that the most important day of your life is in the hands of a seasoned Ninja Entertainment Professional...

"A cheap DJ isn’t good…and a good DJ isn’t cheap! Although all my friends had to learn this the hard way, I’m glad I didn’t! Thank you for all that you did for us! We will gladly recommend Ninja Entertainment Productions to anyone who is planning to get married!"
